Board books are perfect for babies and toddlers explore. Candlewick Press has just published a few new books that my children love. For my girls, age 2 and 3 months:
- Potty By Leslie Patricelli– I really like this book. It’s perfect for my oldest daughter who just turned two that we are just now introducing the potty. This simple book has the most adorable pictures. Our favorite is the page that has pictures of all different undies- polka dot ones, super hero ones, tighty whities, ones with rainbows and more! This is getting McKinley excited to start wearing her own new undies that Santa brought her in her stocking. This book asks the question of what certain animals do when they need to potty and shows lots of pictures of a baby sitting on potty seat. I like to keep a couple of board books in the bathroom for the kids when they are first learning so they can look at them while they are trying to go and this one of course is perfect!
- Tubby By Leslie Patricelli– The same baby from the potty book is ready for a bath. Again, I love the illustrations in this book, especially the one of the baby taking off the diaper and running around naked. It reminds me of my daughter when I get her undressed for her bath because she always says “Mommy, I’m “nakie!” My kids love taking baths and they love this book because it’s something they can relate to. This is another simple board book with few works but perfectly descriptive pictures.
For my son:
Miles to Go By Jamie Harper- “Another day, another drive . . .” So declares Miles, preschooler and car enthusiast. He puts on his seatbelt. Check. He cranks the key. Check. Uh-oh, the horn is broken, but no time to fix it, because—”gotta go!”—Miles is off to school, zigging and zagging past sister’s trike and brother’s truck. The trip is adventurous indeed, with the neighborhood dog to greet, puddles to navigate, even roads to cross (with Mom close at hand, of course). Jamie Harper’s adorable, energetic illustrations and wonderfully childlike sensibility will appeal to every busy little kid who loves things that go.”
This book is so cute because the little boy is in his own little world and it’s adorable to see the imagination that children have. A boy and his car…my son loves this book. Again, the illustrations are adorable- from the garage to the final destination, this little adventure can be “read” by pictures alone which I think is why this is one of my son’s favorites.
There’s Going to Be a Baby By John Burningham Illustrated by Helen Oxenbury– This is the perfect book for expecting moms to read to their toddlers. I had a special book for each of my kids to help them explain that a new baby was coming and I wish I would have had this one just a smidge earlier. This book is about a mom talking to her child about the new baby, what they will name it, when it will arrive, etc. It’s all about special time and the pictures are really heartwarming and hit a note with me. My favorite part is when the boy says “…and I think he should be called Peter or Spider-Man”. My son kept insisting that we call our baby Spider-Man. We weren’t sure if we were having a boy or a girl at the time but ended up picking out the name Parker for a girl. Peter PARKER is Spider-Man and we now we have our own baby Spidey named Parker. I’d definitely recommend this book.
Bink and Gollie By Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee Illustrated by Tony Fucile- The illustrations in this book for ages 6-8 remind me of the Sunday comics which I love. Bink and Gollie are a pair of little girl friends, one tall, one short. “Setting out from their super-deluxe tree house and powered by plenty of peanut butter (for Bink) and pancakes (for Gollie), they share three comical adventures involving painfully bright socks, an impromptu trek to the Andes, and a most unlikely marvelous companion. No matter where their roller skates take them, at the end of the day they will always be the very best of friends” Find out more about Bink and Gollie at www.binkandgollie.com
