Buying Your Student the Perfect Back-to-School Tablet on a Budget

Shopping for back-to-school supplies has changed quite a bit in recent years. Besides the typical pencils, notebooks and backpacks, today’s students are also adding tablets to their shopping lists. This type of technology is helping students in the classroom just as much as it guides them while doing homework.
Growing Trend of Tablets for Students
Computers have been commonplace in the classroom for years and only more recently, tablets have been introduced. In some cases, the school supplies the devices, but for the majority of learners, they purchase them on their own. Tablets are beneficial in many ways. They are:
- Versatile so students can take notes, read textbooks, research projects and watch relevant videos.
- Easily transportable and fit nicely into a backpack, locker or desk.
- Quick to provide the most current information, whereas textbooks are frequently and easily outdated.
- Conveniently used to promote active learning in the classroom.
- A great way to make learning fun and accessible through the countless number of available apps.
- Typically used for networking and allowing students to interact with fellow learners by sharing videos, information, knowledge, assignments and more.
- An easy way to fit into a learner’s lifestyle since most of today’s kids already own and use at least one electronic device on a regular basis.
- Less expensive than laptops or desktop computers.
What to Look for When Buying a Tablet
While cost should be a main priority when buying a tablet, it should not be your only concern. A quality tablet needs to have several features including smart technology so it will last and be able to upgrade as new technology is introduced. Key features to look for include:
- Operating system: There are four basic Operating Systems in use: Apple, Google Android, Microsoft Windows and BlackBerry. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Processor: While there are different processors to consider, the Snapdragon processor offers strong speed connections (4G LTE), high-speed processing and life-like graphics. They also have a built-in security system to keep your information and data safe.
- Screen size and resolution: Again, a personal choice, but they come with 7- and 10-inch screens. Keep in mind that larger tablets do cost a bit more and can be heavier.
- Battery life: You will want a battery that lasts a long time, especially if you are streaming many videos. Make sure the tablet you choose bas a battery life that meets your needs.
How Buy a Tablet While on a Budget
Back-to-school time is one of the better times to purchase a laptop. Retailers such as Staples and Best Buy typically offer some sort of deal on tablets during the summer as students get ready for school. Online, you can also find deals at Amazon, MacMall and Office Depot. If you want to wait a few months, Black Friday is another great time to purchase a tablet. Some retailers even have special promotions or discounts for students with valid school IDs. Be sure to ask about deals or sales before purchasing a tablet.
If a tablet has made its way onto your back-to-school shopping list, make sure you know what you’re looking for. Find out what your students’ needs are and then nail down a few choices. Compare prices at different retailers or online, and ask around for promotions or discounts. Make sure the new backpack your child is taking to school is carrying their new tablet.
