As parents, we never like to see our kids in pain, even if it’s something as simple as a routine immunization. Research has shown that distraction reduces pain. MMJ Labs’ Buzzy is a clever tool designed by pediatrician, pain researcher and mother of three, to take the sting out of shots and reduce pain from splinters and bee stings. It is also used in more than 100 hospitals nationwide as effective way to reduce pain in finger sticks, IV starts, blood draws and injections. Buzzy is a bee shaped palm sized device that combines battery operated vibration and cold using one of two different types of ice wings. One is a reusable gel pack which can be stored in the freezer until ready to use while the other is a one-time use white ice pack. A Velcro strap holds Buzzy in place prior to the procedure. Bee-stractors can also be used as additional distraction. These credit card sized activity cards fit into Buzzy’s tummy slot to block the view of the poke. The brightly colored cards contain hidden pictures for the child to focus on and take their mind off of the pain. Buzzy and Bee-Stractor cards come in a combo pack for $39.95. Buzzy is also available without the Bee-stractor cards. For more information and to purchase Buzzy please visit www.buzzy4shots.com.
We tried Buzzy at my 4 year old son’s annual check up. He had to have immunizations so it was perfect timing for us to test out Buzzy. While I think this device will work great for some kids and many situations, it only built up the drama for Jackson. I had been talking to him about what was coming and how we’d use Buzzy to help to try to prepare him. When I attempted to strap Buzzy to his arm he started to throw a fit because he knew the “poke” was coming. I couldn’t get it strapped on his arm for the life of me. Still, I think Buzzy is a pretty awesome invention. It may be more suitable for children who have more frequent procedures or those with with a different temperament than Jackson. My daughter for instance, who is a little younger would likely be more distracted by it. You know your children best but it’s worth a try to help ease the anxiety at the very least!
