The Hungry Caterpillar is still hungry after 45 years! This year the classic book by Eric Carle is celebrating it’s 45th anniversary on “Very Hungry Caterpillar Day” which takes place every year on the first day of spring (March 20th). I remember reading this book as a child. I loved it because of the unique pages. Books back then didn’t have the bells and whistles that some books have today so I thought the way the book was read with the special pages was really neat. Even though my own children are used to books with all sorts of clever things including interactive story books on the iPad, they still enjoy this classic. It really is timeless.
Since its publication in 1969, 36 million copies of the book have sold worldwide and it has been published in 55 languages. That year the book was also named one of the best children’s books of the year by The New York Times, and it has since become a beloved, must-own classic. Today, every 30 seconds, somewhere in the world, a copy of The Very HungryCaterpillar is sold. Pretty amazing!
