Who Wants Ice Cream… Or Bread… Or Biscuits? — Fun Foods to Make With Kids
Making your own ice cream and baking some delicious bread and biscuits with the kids is fun for any parent. Not only that, it’s a great way to save some cash. Pick some easy to follow recipes and teach your children a new skill that can last a lifetime.
Always time for ice cream
Everyone loves ice cream but you also need somewhere to store this delicious treat, so make sure you have a large fridge freezer or chest freezer to keep your culinary works of art! Beat four egg yolks and half a cup of sugar in a bowl before combining this mixture to one cup of almost boiling hot milk. Pour the milk slowly and whisk while you pour. Take the mixture and heat in a pan, stirring constantly until it thickens — don’t boil, the temperature should be around 170 degrees. Chill the mixture in the refrigerator and add your flavorings along with one cup of heavy cream.
If you don’t have an ice cream maker simply place in a freezer and stir every 45 minutes; this freezing process should take around five hours.
Making the daily bread
Kids will love learning how to bake bread (there’s just something about all that dough!) and it’s a lot of fun learning to bake mini-loafs in tiny flowerpots. Simply mix 2 cups flour , 1/2 Tbsp yeast and a tablespoon of salt in a bowl then pour in 1 1/4 cups of water, two tablespoons of oil and a tablespoon of honey. Knead the dough for around 10 minutes, roll into balls and place into oil-brushed flowerpots before covering with cling film and leaving for an hour. Once the dough has doubled in size simply remove the cling film, place in a pre-heated oven (400ºF) and cook for around 20 minutes until golden brown.
Hail the gingerbread men
Gingerbread men are quick, easy and fun to make. To begin, simply melt unsalted butter (1/2 Cup + 2 Tbsp), dark sugar (1/2 cup) and three tablespoons of syrup together in a pan. Mix a tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda, ground ginger and ground cinnamon in a bowl, then create a dough mixture by incorporating the mixed butter. When the mixture has cooled, roll the dough to around 5 mm thickness and cut out the gingerbread men before placing on pre-heated baking tray (400ºF) and bake for 12 minutes until golden brown.
Just decorate your gingerbread men with icing sugar, cherries and chocolate buttons, then leave to set.
Start your children off with entertaining recipes that are straightforward to put together and this could lead on to more complex recipes if they develop a taste for baking.
