My oldest daughter isn’t even three yet but she loves to sit in the bathroom and watch me as I put my makeup on. When I was potty training her, I used Tinkerbell lip gloss as an incentive and it worked like a charm. Every time she went, she got to wear a little bit of clear lip gloss. I also have a daughter who just turned one. Between the two of them I’m going to have my hands full in a few years!
I want my girls to know that they are beautiful without makeup and to feel good about themselves inside and out. At the same time I want them to be able to experiment and let them be girly girls if they so desire. Luckily, there are a lot of age appropriate beauty products that allow this without going overboard. Nail polish and lip gloss are a great place to start. Disney branded products make them even more fun, adding whimsy and making them feel even more like a princess. That’s McKinley below. She was Rapunzel for Halloween and was over the moon about wearing lipgloss!
Here are some times to help your girls with positive self esteem and age-appropriate beauty habits:
- Allow your daughter to experiment with different clothing and makeup with your help. Give her choices so she feels empowered.
- Open up a dialog about her choices as she figures out her own personal style
- Give positive reinforcement about your daughter as a person by letting her know that you love her and giving specific examples of the traits that make her the beautiful person she is.
Tweens and teens often get caught up in the latest beauty trends, but what are some ways you encourage your kids to be beautiful from the inside out? How old were your girls when you first started letting them wear make up. I painted my daughter’s toe nails with all-natural nail polish when she was just a couple of months old!
