We recently discovered how handy walkie talkies are for keeping in touch with our kids and letting them become a little more independent without sacrificing safety. They have given me such peace of mind! We loved them so much we expanded our set so that each of our kids could carry their own and leave one with a parent so we can all stay in touch.
We like to go to a trail in our neighborhood and go hiking. I had an idea the other day that I knew the kids would love. We packed up a blanket and a picnic lunch and headed to the top of the hill. We enjoyed lunch together then I gave my kids each a walkie talkie. I sent them down the hill and told them to let me know when they got there. Once there, I gave them a mission. I asked them to find and bring back several items I knew they could find along the trail. This fun scavenger hunt kept them busy for awhile and gave them plenty of exercise!
One mission was to bring back 4 different types of leaves. This was really easy for them since there is plenty of vegetation along the trail. Next time I’ll have to get more specific.
Another mission was to bring me on purple flower, one yellow flower and one white flower. This mission was only slightly harder than the leaf mission. There aren’t as many flowers on the trail but I knew they would be able to find these colors.
For their final mission I tried to make it tougher and more specific. I asked for a rock shaped like an egg. A white flower with a yellow center, a piece of wheat grass and a plant that looked like a bean. Imagine my surprise when they returned almost immediately! They told me they had found 3 of the 4 items as I was listing them over the walkie talkie! I’m going to have to up my game! They really loved playing and want to do it again soon.
The camo walkie talkies make us feel even more adventurous. They worked great in expanding our set. All we had to do was make sure they are all on the same channel. The area we used them in has several hills and I wasn’t sure how they would work but they did great! We had loud and clear communication the whole time. There are 22 channels so you can always find a good signal and they work within a 5 mile radius.
Each walkie talkie has an LCD display that shows channels, volume and more. They are very easy to use. There is even a flashlight built in! They run on 3 AAA batteries and must have a long battery life because we use them quite a bit and are still on our first pack of batteries. I love that the display shows how much power is left so I can replace them before they die.
The walkie talkies have VOX function. This allows you to automatically transmit, hands-free. With this, you should be able to hear your kids, even if the walkie talkie is in their pocket. I love that these walkie talkies come with a lanyard so they can be worn around the neck. They are small and lightweight so they are comfortable to wear this way and keep them convenient and handy to use when you need them. It also keeps my kids from losing them while they are out playing.
The price point is amazing on these — they are a great value for the fun and entertainment as well as the peace of mind these give me while my kids are out of sight. You can purchase this set of walkie talkies on Amazon right now for just $26.99 with free shipping!
