Today’s Tip from The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference: Set up a worm compost bin.
“Worms eat food scraps, which become compost after digestion. You can create a worm bin by following the easy steps below.
Choose a container (plastic or glass works best) that is no more than 12 inches deep and has a lid. Line the bottom with strips of moistened newspaper or leaves. Fill the bin with red worms or red wigglers from a garden center (you’ll need approximately two pounds of worms for every one pound of food waste you generate per day). Put the worms and food waste into the bin. Avoid meat, oil and dairy products, which are more difficult for the worms to compost and can attract pests.
After three to five months, your worm bin will fill with compost. Prepare to harvest the compost by not adding new food scraps to the bin for at least two weeks. Push the contents to one side of the worm bin and add fresh bedding and scraps to the other side. The worms will move to the fresh side of the bin, leaving their compost behind. Remove the compost and use it in your garden.”
