The chemical used to create the nonstick coating in your favorite cooking pan is harmful to the environment. Perfluorooctanoic acid or PFOA, has been linked to cancer and respiratory illnesses. The fumes that are released during the manufacturing process can be fatal to birds and the chemical never breaks down in the landfill. Cast-iron pans are a bit more expensive but have no harmful and environmental impacts.
