Today’s Tip from The Green Year: 365 Small Things You Can Do to Make a Big Difference is: Replace your metal staplers with eco-staplers
.
Tiny staples might not seem like a threat to the environment, but the little pieces of metal add up. In the United States, more than 640,000 metric tons of staples are produced each year- and most of them end up in the trash.
During the manufacturing process, the heavy metals used to make staples can end up in the soil and underground water where they are toxic to plants and wildlife.
A number of companies have started selling eco-staplers
– small gadgets that bind up to 5 sheets of paper together without staples. You can find eco-staplers
at most office supply stores.
