I can’t believe it’s September already! Summer went by so fast. School has started and we are getting back into the swing of things with new schedules. We were able to squeeze in some time this week for Gramma in a Box. That’s one of the things I love about it. It’s a super fun project for my kids that doesn’t take up a TON of time and the clean up is pretty painless. My oldest daughter had the day off from sports and my youngest just had an hour of soccer practice. That left a little bit of time in our schedule for some fun!
You might be wondering…What is Gramma in a Box? It’s a subscription service that comes with everything you need to make 2 candy crafts plus one cookie decorating kit for just $20. It’s a pretty great deal considering the cost of the supplies to make these items plus the time it would take to gather them. We’ve been getting our monthly deliveries for about a year now and my kids still get excited when it arrives — they love it!
This month’s theme is Back to School. “Gramma Terry” started making Gramma in a Box for her grandkids who live in a different state. She’d send them the kit and they’d do the projects “together” via Skype. Now she spreads the joy to anyone that wants a subscription! She comes up with themed cookies and candy crafts each month then puts together detailed instructions and bonus tips.
The contents of each box are always very organized. The directions are easy to follow so it’s clear which ingredients go with which project. The kit always comes with three mini tubes of frosting, more than enough to decorate the cookies which usually come with at least 2 different shaped and sized cookies plus sprinkles, colored sugar etc to decorate them with. Often the toppings are unique and not something you’d likely find in your typical grocery store.
The first project this month was Wafer Pencils. My girls were super excited about this one because they love wafer cookies! First, melt the melting chocolate in the microwave. Dip the square end in the melting chocolate then sprinkle with red sugar crystals to create the “eraser”. Next, dip the pointy end into the melting chocolate and before it dries, put a chocolate chip at the tip to creat the pencil lead. I loved this idea — so adorable!
My girls had a hard time with the melting chocolate this month. Usually it melts smoothly but this time they couldn’t get the consistency just right. They may have overheated it. So instead of dipping the cookie they had to use a knife to spread the chocolate on. It worked just fine and they were able to complete the project.
The second project typically uses the left over melting chocolate from the first project so don’t over do it on the first project! This month the second project was Teacher’s Apples. Again, the girls had to use a butter knife to spread the chocolate since it was a little too thick to dip. Using a popsicle stick to hold a marshmallow, coat it in melting chocolate then sprinkle with red sugar crystals. Push a pretzel stick into the top for the stem then attach a candy leaf by using a bit of melting chocolate to get it to stick. This is another unique project that my girls loved! I think they came out really cute.
Always a favorite, the cookie decorating is the third project. They can’t get enough of this one and always look forward to it! The kit always includes several different cookie shapes, three different colors of frosting and a variety of different decorations like colored sugar and sprinkles. You can always get creative and use any left over supplies from the other projects too! Gramma gives lots of tips for the cookie decorating and even gives video demonstrations on her social channels! My kids love trying out her techniques!
