Today’s blog prompt is from Tomi C, SocialMoms member: How much TV do you allow your kids to watch?
How much TV do you allow your kids to watch? – How many hours a week do your children watch TV? Are they only allowed to watch TV on the weekends? What do you let your kids watch? Do you also limit their video games and computer time?
My kids are almost 4, 2 and 6 months. When my oldest was littler I didn’t let him watch TV at all. I never had the TV on during the day. Now that he’s older and I’ve added two more kids to the mix, I admit that I have given in to television. I’d say that my kids watch TV an average of 5 days a week- either a movie or about a movie’s length of Sprout per day (yikes! Writing that out, it sounds like a lot!). I turn it on during the late afternoon when I am trying to get some work done and the kids won’t stop fighting or while I am trying to get dinner on the table and they keep running through the kitchen. I always said I wouldn’t let TV be my babysitter but I guess I didn’t realize how full my hand would be! I feel guilty about it sometimes but I just try to convince myself that it could be worse. I could have the TV on all day.
I also use my iphone as a way to keep my oldest busy but I don’t feel quite as guilty about that because I’ve downloaded lots of storybook apps and educational preschool games.
I do try to balance their day with other activities but I know I could do a better job. How do you weigh in on the topic? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
