When we saw the first previews for Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out we knew right away we wanted to see it. Somehow we never made it to the theater so we’ve been waiting patiently for it to come out on Blu-Ray & DVD. This week, the time finally arrived. If you aren’t familiar with the movie, here’s the synopsis:
“Do you ever look at someone and wonder what’s going on inside their head? Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out” takes an exciting and hilarious journey into the mind to find the answer. Based in Headquarters, the control center of 11-year-old Riley’s mind, five emotions are hard at work, led by lighthearted optimist Joy. She strives to make sure Riley stays happy as she operates alongside fellow emotions Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness.”
The creativity and depth of this movie is unlike any other. So much thought was put into each character and the storyline. It really gets you thinking about human emotions and how they affect you. Each one has an important place and value. You really have to watch the movie, connect with it and enjoy it!
I loved that Amy Poehler from Parks and Recreation was the voice of Joy. She was the perfect choice for the part! I wasn’t familiar with the rest of the vocal cast but got to know them a little bit with the movie’s bonus materials. Phyllis Smith is the voice of Sadness. Her and her character seem to resemble each other quite a bit. There’s some really cool stuff in the bonus material so be sure to check it out. It includes:
Paths to Pixar: The Women of Inside Out – Inside Out filmmakers, from voice actors to animators to production crew, talk about their paths, their goals, the challenges they’ve faced and the lessons they’ve learned along the way. I thought this was really neat to watch with my girls to show that women can have all sorts of different jobs and passions.
Story of the Story – Director Pete Docter talks about the evolution of Inside Out, from the ideas and memories that inspired the story through the hurdles, explorations and experiences that helped shape it into the film it is today.
Mixed Emotions – Inside Out‘s filmmakers talk about how they decided which emotions to focus on in the story and how they went about creating each one’s distinct personality and visual identity. This was especially cool because you get to see the evolution of the characters during the process compared to the final character.
Mapping the Mind – Inside Out‘s artists take you through the years-long process of designing and creating a world everyone knows, but no one has ever seen – the human mind. This had to have been very difficult but all of their hard work really came together to make this one of a kind, meaningful movie.
In addition to some of the behind the scenes stuff is some other cool bonus material including:
Riley’s First Date? (In-Home Exclusive Animated Short Film) – Riley, now 12, is hanging out at home with her parents in San Francisco when potential trouble comes knocking: a boy shows up at the door. Can Mom and Dad’s emotions handle “Riley’s First Date?” This short is more about the relationship between Riley’s parents and a neat look into their life.
LAVA (Theatrical Short Film) – Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, LAVA is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years. This is a really cute short film all told by song and visuals.
These are just some of the bonus materials that are available with Inside Out and totally worth watching!
