I consider myself a pretty cautious parent. It is my job to protect my children after all. I follow recommended guidelines on just about everything and watch my kids like a hawk, even at home! Still, sometimes things happen. A couple of years ago my daughter who was around 3 at the time, walked down the hallway and into our bedroom. I followed her a minute or two later and caught her with a mouthful of my vitamins and immediately had her spit them out. The childproof cap didn’t stop her and I had them put away where I thought they were safe. Luckily after calling poison control and a trip to the emergency room as a precaution, she was fine.
It’s pretty common sense to keep vitamins and medications safe from little hands but there things you may not have thought of that can be dangerous to kids. Did you know that about one child is poisoned every hour by laundry detergent pods according to the journal Pediatrics? From 2012-2013, about 17,230 children under the age of 6 were injured by laundry detergent pods, 700 children were seriously sickened, and at least one child died.
Laundry detergent pods contain highly concentrated liquid detergent that contains a higher amount of surfactant which is more likely to cause serious side effects in children compared to regular detergent. The brightly colored, sweet smelling pods resemble candy and were originally packaged in clear containers that resemble candy jars making them very appealing to kids. Of the injuries that occurred, 80% were from swallowing the detergent. Corneal abrasions can also occur after a child squirts the detergent into their eyes.
It’s important to be diligent when it comes to protecting our little ones. Take a look at the graphic above, then go through your home and make sure you’ve covered all of your bases! Don’t take any chances!
