I’ve always wanted to go to Seaside and had been curious about KOA camping so I found a KOA site just a few miles from Seaside, invited some friends and we were off. Last summer we bought a “toy hauler” camping trailer but before that, we had always been tent campers. KOA offers something for everyone. You can get a tent site, a trailer site with hookups for water and electricity or a variety of different cabins. We were offered the opportunity to check out the Deluxe Cabins so we left the trailer at home for this trip. I have to say, even though I wasn’t sure what to expect, I was blown away not only by the cabin’s amenities but by the entire campground itself.
This little home away from home included a porch with table and chairs and a barbecue. There was a ramp on one side by the parking area that made it really easy to unload our belongings.
We even had a huge patio with a built-in fire pit! Talk about luxury camping! The campground will even deliver firewood from the on-site store!
This is the main living area. You can see the excitement on my son’s face — we had just walked in and the kids were checking the place out. The little kitchen came with a full size fridge/freezer, coffee pot, microwave, enough dishes for 6 (including wine glasses!) and pretty much everything else you need. A small table with 3 chairs, a flat panel tv and a pull out bed made up the rest of this living area.
Our favorite part about our cabin was the little play area upstairs. The ceiling is too low for adults to stand up in but it was the perfect space for kids to play. We brought a big box of Legos that the kids really enjoyed playing with once we were in for the night. There were some low chairs up there so we could hang out too if we wanted to.
We don’t have bunk beds at home so the kids really thought their little room was pretty cool. This particular cabin came with the linens needed to make up the beds however some of the smaller cabins require you to bring your own.
The master bedroom had a fully made up Queen sized bed. I’m not sure how I forgot to grab a photo of it but the room was small & cozy with another flat panel tv, a small built in bench and some hooks on the wall which helped give us more space by hanging our bags on them. It even had an AC unit with a remote control!
Last but not least, this cabin has a fully functional bathroom with a toilet and SHOWER! I love to camp but I hate not being able to shower. It was so nice to have this camping luxury! The campsite does have other showers on site but it was so nice having a personal one to ourselves!
We got to the campground around noon. Check-in wasn’t for several hours but luckily our cabin was ready and we were able to get settled! The weekend we were there, it was a Christmas in July theme. Our friends wouldn’t be arriving until later so we checked out the grounds.
We played around of mini golf on the 8 hole course. This is one of the activities that are included with your stay. When you check in, everyone gets an arm band to identify you as a guest.
Another free activity was this giant bounce pillow. There was a short wait for this but you get a long time to bounce and can go as often as you want!
There were several playgrounds on site. My kids especially liked the bridge and fort that this one offered. There were also some swings at this one. It’s a lot of fun to walk around the campground and discover all it has to offer!
We stopped in for lunch at Iredale’s Wheelhouse. Here you can get a whole pizza for $12, a bucket of ribs for $28 or a variety of other reasonably priced foods.
This is also where the free pancake breakfast is served every morning from 7-10 am. The pancakes are free and you can get add-ons like bacon, sausage and juice for a very reasonable price. It was really nice to be able to grab a quick breakfast before starting our day. There was a line each morning but it moved quickly.
The outdoor pool is conveniently located right outside the restaurant so you don’t have to go far for a bit to eat when you’re hanging out at the pool!
Pets are welcome at KOA campsites. This one even had a pretty cool dog park! The kids had fun playing there too while our friend’s dog got some time to roam.
Across the street from the KOA campground was a state park with a shipwreck on the beach! The kids thought it was super cool. You can climb on it and pretend you’re a pirate!
Each cabin has a guest book. We flipped through the one in ours to see what previous guests had to say. Fultano’s Pizza kept coming up as a favorite so we found one nearby and went to lunch. They made room for our large group and the unlimited pizza, salad bar and beverages was perfect for fueling up at a decent price. They even made pizzas to our liking for the buffet!
A few miles north of the KOA campground in Astoria, visitors can find the house that was used in the filing of The Goonies. Right down the street from that is the school where Kindergarten Cop was filmed. The KOA actually had a movie night on Saturday that was showing The Goonies!
This flier shows some of the other activities that were scheduled for the weekend. We went to the ice cream social. It was held in a large building that also offered indoor basketball, ping pong, arcade games and more. We didn’t stay long so we must have missed Santa though we heard he’d be making an appearance.
After we checked out the Goonies house we headed into Seaside which is about 12 miles South of the KOA. The main street has lots of ice cream and candy shops, souvenir shops, a big arcade and some restaurants. At the end you’ll find the beach! There were lifeguards when we were there and there is a place to rinse off outside so you can wash your feet or rinse the sand off your body before heading back.
There’s an outlet mall nearby for shopping and a Fred Meyer that is really convenient for picking up groceries or other needs. We stopped at both on the way back. We grabbed some burgers to grill for dinner and planned on a relaxing night around the campfire. The barbecue went out in middle of cooking so I called the front desk and they said they’d send maintenance down. As soon as I hung up I realized we could just switch the propane tank with our friend’s cabin next door since they weren’t using it. It still wasn’t working well so we just brought the other barbecue down to our place. When maintenance stopped by we were already back on track with dinner and they apologized for the inconvenience and told us to just go ahead and leave the barbecue there when we were done and they would put it back which I thought was really nice.
Another thing that was really nice is that when your garbage gets full you just set it out in front. They come by several times a day and it was picked up very quickly!
We had an awesome time and are considering making it an annual trip! The deluxe cabins were so cool but next time we might just bring our trailer and save a little money.
