School is out already for my preschooler. During the teacher conference my son’s teacher gave me so ideas on things he could work on over the summer to prepare him for Kindergarten. It’s important for kids of all ages to practice skills over the summer and keep their brains active. Did you know that studies have shown that students lose about one month’s worth of learning over the summer? Keep them from having to re-learn certain lessons when they return to school by planning fun, educational activities for them during summer break.
One of our favorite educational toy brands, LeapFrog, has come up with a program called the LeapFrog Summer Camp makes it easy to plan a fun curriculum for the summer. LeapFrog has planned exciting weekly themes with lots of free printable activities as well as ideas you can do anywhere to explore geography, writing, science, art and more.
My five year old, Jackson, has really been missing school. He loves doing projects and school work so I was excited to get started with week 1 of the LeapFrog Summer Camp Program. I love how there were activities and worksheets for each day of the week so we didn’t feel too overwhelmed. We didn’t complete all of the activities but we did do many of them including making a diorama of Jackson’s bedroom. Out of all of the things we did, this was Jackson’s favorite. In fact, he’s still playing with it this week! We used a small cardboard box to create a replica of his room. He built a bed, dresser and lego table out of Duplo blocks, cut in a door that opens and closes, drew on a window, the closets and artwork on the walls. Jackson was very careful to make sure things were accurate. He even made sure to count his dresser drawers so his Duplo version would match the real thing.
Another activity we really enjoyed was exploring National Monuments. It was a neat opportunity to talk about places we might want to visit someday. Jackson enjoyed coloring the map, cutting out pieces like Mount Rushmore and gluing them on the map where they belong. We are looking forward to this week’s until which involves animals!
Build skills and have some fun with these weekly themes:
| Week 1: June 4-10 |
Out & About—Learn about the people and places in our world on your way to becoming a global citizen. |
| Week 2: June 11-17 |
Caring for Animals—Experience animals in new ways and explore themes of responsibility and compassion. |
| Week 3: June 18-24 |
Puzzle Time—Build logic and reasoning skills as you puzzle your way through brain-bending activities! |
| Week 4: June 25-July 1 |
Art & Music—Let your creativity run wild as you experiment with a range of media, including handmade instruments, crafts and a home art gallery! |
| Week 5: July 2-8 |
Writing That’s Real—Explore fascinating nonfiction topics and try your hand at investigative writing. |
| Week 6: July 9-15 |
Storytelling—Bring your ideas to life through storytelling, music, art, drama and pretend play! |

| Week 8: July 23-29 |
Friendship Week—Get ready for school and International Friendship Day by exploring what it means to be friends. |
Each week includes at least one craft, several printable activities and a fun weekend activity or a suggested field trip. Most craft activities will require common supplies such as scissors, glue and/or crayons. If you want to participate in the weekly photo contest you’ll also need a camera.
The cool thing about this program is that you can jump in at any time and participate when it fits your schedule. Some activities will, however, be built on a previous week’s lesson. Visit www.leapfrog.com/summer beginning June 4 to find out more and start the program! You can download the LeapFrog Camp print application to get daily camp activities sent directly to your printer or sign up to receive emails with camp updates to make it easier for you.
What will you be doing to keep your kids minds active and engaged over the summer?
