When my husband and I set out shopping for our first home we were pretty flexible with our “must-have” criteria. We could visualize homes upgraded or altered to make them more appealing. We knew we could fix a house up a little to make it our own and that’s exactly what we ended up doing. For our very first project, out when the ancient carpet and in went the beautiful bamboo hardwood floors we lovingly picked out together.
Several years and three kids later we outgrew our first home and set out on our search for a bigger home. This time we had a much longer list of must-haves. One of them was hardwood floors. Allergies made it essential and with messy kids it just made sense. I love our current house. It had nearly every one of our wish list items including the flooring, however I don’t love the floors. The are a light colored wood and came with dings, scratches and flaws. Over the years, my kids have added many more. I keep dreaming of having them refinished or replaced.
There are SO many options these days! I was browsing GoHaus and drooling over some of them. I like the look of this vinyl plank flooring and wonder if it would be a good option until the kids are older. This particular color/style is $2.99 a square foot but can be as low as $0.99 a square foot!I’d love to go with luxury flooring and real wood though. This beautiful “fossil” maple is the perfect medium brown and already has a slightly distressed look that would work well for our family. It’s $5.99 a square foot. Hubby wants to wait. I want to bite the bullet. The problem is, I know how putting in new floors has a snowball effect. The last time we did it we ended up also replacing all of the molding, then all of the doors so everything would look better together. This time I’d definitely want to re-do our kitchen cabinets since they are the same light color as our current floors and I don’t love them.
I might be dreaming for awhile longer…..
