Even with very busy lives it’s important to take time share happiness with those around you. I find that being a mom of 3 little ones is quite the challenge. Whenever I go out with my 3 year old, two year old and 4 month old in tow people look at me and say “You’ve got your hands full!” I usually smile, say “Yes, I do!” and hurry on my way. But when the elderly have something to say, I slow down to listen. I’ll smile and chit chat with them for a minute or two and hopefully my kids’ smiles will brighten their day. Sometimes they’ve got some good parenting advice or a funny story about when their own kids were young. I wish I had MORE time so that I could visit nursing homes and provide some companionship to the lonely. Maybe once my kids are a little older…
A local coffee shop I visit collects items for those in the community with needs. Over Christmas they had a giving tree and I took a few tags and matched up some toys to provide as gifts. Luckily, Main Street Coffee in Lake Stevens, WA is involved in the community year round. I just read on their facebook page that there is a need for diapers and formula. I may not see the smiles on the faces of those in the community that need help but I know that my donations are easing the stress a little.
My mom is the most giving person I know. She drives her elderly neighbors to the grocery store, plays with and entertains my kids when she knows I am having a stressful day and is always willing to lend a hand to anyone who asks. She offers help to those who are too humble to ask for it. Even with her own health issues, she gives so much. I try to show my appreciation to her as much as I’m able. I’ve sent her cookies and flowers, bought pedicure gift certificates at deep discounts so we can spend quality time together and have cooked meals for her so she doesn’t have to (believe me, she’s cooked me plenty!) I have such gratitude for her and am so thankful to have her in my life. The least I can do is try to share a little of that happiness.
Wherever you are and whatever you do, try to think of little ways to share happiness with others around you. Sharing makes ME happier and chances are, you’ll feel the same.
