One of my best kept secrets is swaddling a baby when they are young. Not to toot my own horn, but I have helped so many moms by telling them to swaddle their babies while they sleep. I know from experience. I swaddled my daughter until about 5 months old and she slept through the night for 12 hours at 4 months! My son did great until I stopped swaddling him around 2 or 3 months. I learned my lesson! He was starling himself!
My son was always a big guy, so he escaped the velcro swaddles easily. I got online and purchased a Miracle Blanket immediately. This was the best thing since sliced bread. It is a little harder to get on but it works so much better! If done correctly it is nearly impossible for the baby to wiggle their arms free. One of the reasons swaddling helps babies sleep is due to the fact that until babies are three to five months old they have something called Moro Reflex. Also called startle reflex, infants respond to loud noises by flinging their arms out and then retracting them. This reflex is also caused when the baby feels like it is falling. The fear of falling is the only unlearned fear in newborns. This is one of the best gifts you could give a new mother or yourself!
