General Mills recently announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.
You know, I’d much rather give my kids a bowl of these types of cereal as a treat than cookies or candy because they actually have nutritional value!
Cereal benefits:
* Ready-to-eat cereals, including presweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children´s diets.
* Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child´s diet today.
* More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.
A study in 1998 showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school, score higher on tests than those who skip breakfast and are less likely to be late or miss class and have fewer discipline problems
While I tend to feed my children cereals that are marketed to be healthier choices, I am glad that General Mills has taken this step to lower the sugar content in those cereals children always ask for. I plan on offering these to my children as snacks, occasional breakfasts, or even as dessert!
