The New York Times says “firstborns are smarter”. Are they? Is yours? Read the article by clicking on the appropriate frame in my JuiceBox on the sidebar, then read my take below…and comment! Tell me how you feel too! And don’t forget to answer the poll…do you have a sharper firstborn?
The NY Times article had some interesting theories on why firstborns may be smarter than their siblings. Since my children are only 2 and 10 months it’s hard to tell. All I know is that my firstborn, my son, is a smarty! My daughter has a lot to live up to!
In my own experience, it’s harder to find the same amount of time that was lavished on my first child now that I have two. Life is just busier. My daughter doesn’t get the one on one time that my son had at her age. He’s very busy and needs more attention than she does. She is very laid back and “easy”.
The difference in I.Q. from the studies discussed in the article is very small. They argue that while small, it can mean the difference between a high B average and a low A which in turn could mean the difference between admission to an elite private liberal-arts college and a less exclusive public one.
I disagree. Grades aren’t always an indicator of I.Q. Grades can be earned with hard work. Getting an A might be easier for some than others but determination also plays a role.
Regardless, the study doesn’t concern me. A slight difference in I.Q. won’t make me love one more than the other. I love my children just the way they are.
