Working from home with three kids can be tricky. I used get a couple of hours of quiet during naps but now that my oldest is five, he only takes an occasional nap. Since I still need to get some work done, I usually give Jackson some “work” of his own to do. While his sisters are napping he’s allowed to use my iPad but he’s limited to educational games, puzzles and coloring. I try to keep things fresh with new materials to keep him engaged. The latest downloads are definitely keepers:
- When Things Go Wrong with Robots — This adorable book is about the things that robots could do but also what could happen if things go wrong with a robot. It might do silly things like vacuum the lawn instead of mowing it. The illustrations are really cute and they way they are simply animated is pretty clever. You can choose to have the book read aloud but the “I Can Read” version is much cooler. Heart symbols on some of the pictures do different things when touched. A cat meows, the lawn mower makes noise etc. Some of the pictures have a pop up that shows you how to spell the word by dragging the letters into place. This book also comes with a matching game and a puzzle
- Things that Robots Spell — This app is sort of a companion to the book. It gives you 10 different words to spell by dragging and dropping the letters into place, then it spells and says the word back to you. It shows a picture of the word you are spelling along with the letter it starts with. Each time you start the app it gives you a different set of 10 words. This app not only helps with learning to spell words but it teaches concepts of reading like always reading from left to right.
These are the types of apps I love because they are fun while still being educational. They’re perfect for Jackson who will be starting kindergarten in the fall. He’s really into robots so these apps really hold his interest. O Sotry Story offers an entire collection of interactive storybook apps to engage your little ones and help build their reading skills. They feature original artwork and are designed for kids ages 2 to 5 to develop a variety of early reading skills, including word recognition, spelling and memory.
