Reckless Deck: An Idea Generating Artistic Game Review & #Giveaway

As a work at home mom, the summer is always a bit of a struggle. Thankfully I only work part time and my job is flexible but when I need to get work done I tend to let my kids have screen time. That way it’s quiet and there’s no fighting to deal with. Even though all three of my kids are involved in sports year round and I keep them active with hiking days and trips to the lake etc., I still feel guilty about the screen time and try to find ways around it. The Reckless Deck is one of my secret weapons!

A husband and wife team produced Reckless Deck, a series of idea generating card decks based on sci-fi, fantasy and super heroes. The Apprentice Pack was designed for kids aged 7-12 so it’s perfect for my 7, 9 and 11 year olds. The deck was showcased at the Toy Fair in NYC early this year and has won several awards including the Family Choice Award and the Preferred Choice Award from Creative Child Magazine in the Creative Play category.

The cards combine iconic imagery and objects in different categories that kids use as inspiration for creating their own characters in an endless supply of mash ups. The deck retails for $15 and currently has a single Expansion Pack (with more planned for the future) that sells for $7.50. This gender-neutral game not only inspires natural little artists but gives the not so artistically inclined some imaginative tools and boost they need to invent and draw brand new characters.

Along with the Reckless Deck we got the Alice in Wonderland Expansion Pack. My daughters love art but son has never been into it. Surprisingly, all three of my kids really enjoyed this “game” and it kept them busy for a good amount of time. The first time they used it, they each created two different characters, one from the main deck and one from the Expansion Pack by drawing a random card from each category. When they were finished, I still needed some time to finish up some work so I asked them to write a story about their characters. Amazingly, all three of them gladly did so! They were practicing their writing skills without even knowing it!

The image above shows my seven year old daughter’s drawing using the cards she drew from the Expansion Pack. The only help I had to give was to explain to her what croquet is and remind her who the Cheshire Cat was. The Reckless Deck is a really cool idea and it was neat seeing it action. It’s something I now have in my “parenting tool box” to use as needed, when my kids need some quiet, creative time away from screens but are having a hard time finding something to do on their own.
