Being a nanny for over 9 years, I’ve used the time out method plenty of times. I was excited to try the Time Out Pad with my two year old. While it’s recommended for ages 2 and up, I don’t think my son was quite ready for it (he just turned two). The Time Out Pad has lights and plays
music and he thought it was a fun toy. By the end of the day he was actually doing things he knows he shouldn’t and asking for a time out. Even so, I believe it will become a valuable tool once he’s a little older. I love that the Time Out Pad has a built in timer that can be set for an age-appropriate amount of time. One minute per each year of the child’s age is usually a good rule of thumb (two year=2 minutes, three years=3 minutes etc). The pad also has lights on it that resemble a stop light- red, yellow and green to signal how much time is left. If the child gets up before the time out is over an alarm sounds and the timer is stopped until they sit back down. At the end of the time out a tune is played to signal the end of the session. To use the Time Out Pad successfully, follow these steps:
- Warning
- Final Warning
- Time Out
- Apology
- Praise and Move on
These steps are elaborated on here and also come printed on a reminder card with the Time Out Pad.
