Schwinn recently launched a new line of bikes they call SmartStart which are designed to make learning to ride a bike easier and more fun. My oldest learned to ride a bike a couple of years ago but never really gained confidence in riding. He was most comfortable riding in a circle in our driveway but had trouble pedaling in a straight line down the road. Over the fall and winter while his bike was parked, he outgrew it. We surprised him with a new Schwinn SmartStart bike for his 9th birthday and he was so excited to start riding again.
Jackson loves the colors and graphics on this particular bike because they are his school and sports team’s colors. As you can see in this photo, the seat is easily adjustable by using a lever to raise or lower it — no tools needed! The cool thing about this bike is that when the seat is raised to fit a growing child, the distance from the seat to the handle bars increases. This increases the reach distance and allows the bike to grow with him. The seat is angled to make it easier to pedal and the pedal width is consistent with a child’s hip width to increase leverage and balance. The entire bike was designed to fit a child’s body for comfort and to give kids more confidence riding on two wheels.
The Schwinn SmartStart bike really has given Jackson more confidence in his riding ability and he’s cruising along a lot better this year! No more riding in circles! Jackson is excited to take his new bike camping and has requested that mommy and daddy get bikes so we can all ride together as a family. We like that idea!
Schwinn has redesigned all of its 12 inch, 14 inch, 16 inch, 18 inch and 20 inch wheeled bikes to fit a child’s proportion. Each bike is equipped with seats and grips designed to support smaller bodies. These things combined with a lighter bike frame help children maintain control of their bike and give them the confidence they need to ride on two wheels.
