When I was pregnant with my first child I really started to worry about the products we were using in our home. Chemical cleaners were at the top of my list. I knew it wouldn’t be long before I’d have a baby crawling on the floor and touching many different surfaces around our home. I also knew that babies LOVE putting their hands in their mouth. The thought of my baby ingesting chemicals made my decision to switch to non-toxic cleaners a no-brainer! I started out mainly using vinegar and baking soda but quickly realized the extra benefits of essential oils and incorporated those into my homemade cleaners making them not only smell better but clean better as well.
Many essential oils have antibacterial and antifungal properties. Citrus oils can be great degreasers. There are a lot of options for making your own household cleaners! I recently started using a surface cleaner recipe from Simply Earth and found that it works great for cleaning my glass stovetop as well as my kitchen counters. To make your own small bottle, follow the recipe below:
13 drops Lemon Essential Oil
7 drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
2 Tablespoons White Vinegar
2 Tablespoons Distilled Water
Add all ingredients to a small spray bottle and shake for 30 seconds to mix. Shake before each use as separation will occur. Use this spray to disinfect surfaces and loosen grime. Just spray and wipe with a towel. If you have marble or granite, be sure to replace vinegar with liquid castile soap as the acidity in vinegar may damage natural stone surfaces.
This is a great recipe to try out to see if you like it. I personally prefer to make a larger amount in a big glass spray bottle since I use it so frequently. This smaller sized would perfect for keeping in each bathroom for wiping down sinks, counters, door knobs and light switches.
