Sparkup Magical Book Reader Review
I’ve seen a lot of tech gadgets for kids but the Sparkup Magical Book Reader was one of my favorites from the second I had one in my hands. I know it’s important for parents to read to their children every day and it’s emphasized by my children’s teachers at school. I hate to admit it, but a lot of nights I just don’t have time or am too burnt out from a busy day to have the patience. It makes me feel like a horrible, bad parent but I know I’m not alone. I don’t know a single family that isn’t busy. With sports practices, dinner and other homework, finding the time to get everything done can be a real challenge.
While I’m not giving up on trying to find the time to read to my kids as often as possible, the Sparkup Magical Book Reader is taking a bit of the guilt off my shoulders when I can’t. Right out of the box, this device is super easy to use. It has a quick start voice guided tutorial so even the least technically inclined can use it. Designed for ages 3 through 8, the reader attaches to the top of a book and can record the user’s voice while tracking each page with it’s built-in camera. After the book is recorded, anytime it is re-attached to the reader, the camera recognizes the pages and plays the correct recording for each page. This is great because even if your child skips a page or goes out of order, the book “knows” and makes sure that the correct words are read aloud.
The Sparkup Magical Reader sells for $59.99 and comes with two paperback classics which are preloaded into the reader: “Shrek” by William Steig read by Emmy Award winner Stanley Tucci and “Tikki Tikii Tembo” by Arlen Mousel read by Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden. The package also comes with a hardcover demo book, instruction manual, one USB cable, and three AA batteries.
The fact that this device works with ANY book is a huge advantage over other types of book readers on the market today. You can record up to 50 of your children’s favorite books in your own voice. You also have the option to download professionally recorded stories, complete with sound effects, directly from the Sparkup website.
You can even get other family members involved! Have grandparents record a few books so your kids can enjoy their favorite stories they read together, even when it’s not physically possible. I love that my kids can listen, read along and feel connected even when apart. The Sparkup Reader is great for nights when you have a baby sitter or when a parent is out of town too. Even though it’s pretty simple, it’s kind of genius.
