This week’s Frequently Asked Question from eBeanStalk
Why do kids ask the same question over and over?
By: Gopi Patel, MSE.d Special Educator
Question: My child keeps asking the same question over and over again day-in and day-out…20 times a day!?!? I am so annoyed what should I do? Of course I want him to be inquisitive, but this is driving me nuts.
Answer: As kids are learning to figure out the power of knowledge they will ask questions over and over again. I understand that this can get annoying and frustrating and it’s easy to get a little upset. I suggest the following approach;
1.Simply answer the question one time
2.When they ask again, answer the question, but then have your child repeat the answer back to you. Praise him and say “now I know you the answer, great job”.
3.If he still asks you the same question again simply write the answer down on a piece of paper, and tell him it written down here, and now you know where to find the answer (I understand that he may not yet know how to read yet).
4.Driving you nuts yet? Your little one is really persistent and doesn’t let-up. Simply say, “I am not going to answer that questions anymore, because I know you know the answer now, and then simply IGNORE him.”
Sometimes I get this behavior when we play games. I try as hard as I can to move onto the next question or activity (after we’ve answered the question, of course) and this usually works as my child has moved onto the next challenge.
