Until recently I’d never heard of weighted blankets. While they are most commonly used in the autism community and those with sensory needs, weighted blankets can benefit anyone! Who doesn’t experience sleeplessness and anxiety from time to time?
Weighted blankets benefit users just like a deep tissue massage. This pressure aids in releasing serotonin in the body. Serotonin is a hormone in our bodies that gives us a sense of well being. Some of that serotonin becomes melatonin which helps us relax and go to sleep.
Weighting Comforts makes weighted blankets are made in a partnership with Sew For Hope. Sew For Hope is a non-profit organization that provides sewing machines and sewing classes for international refugees that have been resettled in Middle Tennessee. Weighting Comforts provides an opportunity for these refugees to make a living with artistry and skill. The weighted beads inside each 5” pocket of the blankets are made from an FDA-approved, non-irritating PVC compound. The blankets can be machine washed and dried making them easy to care for.
I received the twin size Charcoal Weighted Blanket for my review. This blanket was designed for cold sleepers with it’s soft and cozy flannel fabric. I love that it’s grey because to me, it’s my comfort color. The twin size is perfect because it’s not too heavy to take from one place to another. I love to snuggle up with it on the couch at night and can easily take it to bed with me when it’s time. It’s just the right size for my side of the bed since my husband doesn’t like the extra weight. Me on the other hand? I’ve always needed to sleep with heavy blankets. Even in the summer I can’t stand to be uncovered and don’t sleep nearly as well with light blankets when it gets too hot. Luckily, Weighting Comforts also makes a COOLMAX blanket and blankets with quilting fabric which tends to be much cooler than flannel. It’s great that there are options!
My oldest daughter is 9. She fell in love with my blanket as soon as she tried it. I’m not surprised. She sleeps like I do. She’s been taking it to bed with her every night and sleeping like a log! I’m going to have to buy another one so we don’t have to share! How can anyone resist a blanket that reduces anxiety, helps you relax, improves your sleep and makes you feel like you are being hugged or held gently? Not us!
