My youngest is in first grade so she’s still learning to read. She can use some extra practice at home but reading lists of sight words over and over can get a little boring. I really love technology when it comes to getting extra practice on school work at home. The right apps can make learning fun. One of my favorite ones is Wonster Words
Wonster Words is an award winning app for iOS and Android that helps kids learn to sound out words, learn their letter sounds and ultimately learn to read and spell. The game not only introduces basic word families to familiarize children with the sounds they make but it also helps broaden their vocabulary by defining they words they spell and using them in example scenarios with fun animations.
The way the game works is really neat. Kids play with animated letters that sound out the phonics, gliding vowels and consonant blends as they are being played. The letter characters are silly and fun making it interesting. Once the words are complete, short animations and mini-games tell the story of the words via a group of adorable Wonster characters! Kids also earn a gift to open for completing the word and can grow their collection of prizes. I love that kids are rewarded for their work, encouraging them to keep playing and learning.
There are hours upon hours of fun built into the pro version of Wonster Words which is fully unlocked. This means you get all of the mini games (including special holiday editions!), and all of the word packs plus any new material added to the app. I love that I can find certain sounds that my child may need more practice with. For example, the PH pack will demonstrate the concept that the “ph” letter combo makes the “f” sound.
Features of the app include:
- Learn the ABC’s and letter sounds
- Fall in love with the adorable Wonster crew as they explore word families, phonemes, digraphs and more
- Silly animations reinforce word definitions in a fun and engaging way
- Over 150 words, 12 word families and 9 original stories
- Encourages exploration and engagement without scoring, quizzing, limits, or stress
- Stories cover popular children’s themes including: birthdays, friendships, outdoors, space, and
more
*NEW* for 2017 Holidays
- BRAND NEW short stories
- 5 new story packs boasting over 40 new words and original animations
- 5 new letter-based minigames
Wonster Words has won numerous awards including Parent’s Choice, Children’s Technology Review Editor’s Choice, National Parenting Product Award, and more. The game is designed for ages 3-6. My daughter is 7 and still enjoys the game. She needs extra practice with her reading and this game helps me work it into our super busy schedule. She can play it in the car on the way to basketball practice or while she is waiting for one of her siblings. It’s a great learning tool and Parker loves it because it feels like a game rather than work.
Wonster Words is free to download for iOS and Android but in-app purchases are available to unlock more content. The pro version that I mentioned above is also available for full access.
