I have a Kindergartener that is learning to read. She loves to write too but gets frustrated with spelling. I just downloaded a new app that gives her the confidence she needs to write without hesitation and learn at the same time. I was impressed with the app from the start because it’s easy to use, fun for my daughter and take the frustration out of the learning process.
The idea is that kids can author their own books, even when they are learning to read and write. They choose a photo from the iPad’s camera roll or take one of their own. Then they type out a sentence or two on their own. They can make a cover and as many pages as they want.

One of the pages McKinley created.
At first I sat next to her and helped her learn to use the app but she didn’t need much help — she picked it up right away. When I was sitting next to her she asked me lots of questions and wanted extra help. I had something I needed to do so I asked her to create a few pages on her own and I would look at them when I was done. I couldn’t believe what I came back to! She had made several pages on her own and I was able to read them! I typed her sentences out correctly below her words and she played it back with the speaker button. She loves this part because for some reason she thinks the man’s voice is hilarious. She gets so excited when she sees that some of her words were spelled correctly and she loves the excitement she sees from me when I see her learning!
The keyboard speaks the letters as they’re typed reinforcing correct usage and memorization. WriteReader is a valuable tool that should be in every household’s educational arsenal!

Other key features are the phonetic keyboard and an interface allowing the parent, teacher and/or older sibling to write the text in conventional writing below the child’s version.
