Make Homemade Ice Cream with YayLabs! Ice Cream Ball
Our family loves ice cream (and what family doesn’t?!) We also like to experiment with making things on our own. It’s easier than you think to make your own homemade ice cream with The YayLabs! Ice Cream Ball. With just a few ingredients and about 20 minutes of fun you’ll be eating some of the most delicious and freshest ice cream you’ve ever had! Start with this basic recipe:
1 pint of Half & Half or cream
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
1/3 cup + 2 tablespoons sugar
Add the ingredients to the ice cream mixing chamber. Add ice and rock salt in the other end of the ice cream ball. Shake it, pass it and roll it around for about 20 minutes. Make a game out of it or tell stories or jokes and sing songs to add to the fun. When you open the ice cream ball back up you’ll find delicious fresh ice cream inside! Put the kids to “work” after dinner to whip up a batch. Add toppings afterward or choose from a variety of recipes in the included booklet.
We brought the ice cream ball with us to Guemes Island over the 4th of July weekend. My 3 kids and their cousins had a blast playing with the ball and making the ice cream. The rolled it to each other while sitting in a circle outside on the grass. They shook the ball from time to time but mostly just rolled it. It’s somewhat heavy so tossing it wasn’t really an options for the little ones.
The ice cream ball worked better than we expected it to and the final results were SO good! After about 10 minutes of playing with the ball you open it up and scrape down the sides with a wooden or plastic utensil. This part can get really messy so it’s best for an adult to do it as to not spill the cream that hasn’t yet turned to ice cream. Another 10 minutes and you’ll have a pint of ice cream ready to eat!
We actually made two batches. The first batch we scooped out was pretty soft so we put it in the freezer while we made the second batch then mixed the two together when we were finished. We topped the ice cream with fresh strawberries and the kids were so proud of their final product! The parents were all jealous and were wishing we had brought more supplies to make another batch!
This is a really fun product to use at parties or camping and we can’t wait to try some other flavors. For the richest ice cream, use heavy cream. That’s what we used and it was SO good. You can use any type of cream or milk but it will determine the flavor and the length of time needed to make it. I was concerned I wouldn’t easily be able to find the rock salt needed to make the ice cream but I found it on the baking aisle at my grocery store. It’s also called ice cream salt making it easier to spot!
We had so much fun with the ice cream ball I’m sure it will make regular appearances on vacations and special outings. As I mentioned before, it’s a bit messy. The ice cream chamber is pretty small but also deep which makes it a little difficult to scoop out. You also can’t use metal so having the right utensil can make a big difference. We had a large plastic spoon which wasn’t ideal. If there was one thing I could change about the product, it would come with a scoop! Other than that, this is one of the coolest things every family should own! I’m sure that our children made some great memories making ice cream with their cousins on the 4th of July with many more to come!
