Baby Wearing

by mindy on January 17, 2009

When my son was a baby I saw discussions on message boards all the time about baby wearing. Everyone had strong opinions on which wrap or carrier was the best.  At the time (less than two years ago) the selection of these items at major retailers brick and mortar stores was slim to none- even at Babies R Us. I was hesitant to buy one online because sizing can be tricky and I didn’t want the hassle of spending a good chunk of change and possibly spending even more on return shipping if it didn’t fit or I didn’t like it.  Unfortunately that kept me from trying one.  Since then, Target has started carrying a small selection in their stores including Baby K’tan, the Peanut Shell and Hotslings which are popular among the baby wearing crowd.  The Moby Wrap is also a popular choice.

I knew I’d have my hands full with a newborn and a toddler so with the birth of my daughter I decided I needed a sling.  I did my research online, reading reviews and comparing prices. I wanted something easy to use, reasonably priced and functional beyond the itty bitty stage.  I chose the Baby K’tan in black.  It can be worn in more than 8 positions with kids up to 42 pounds!  My daughter is only a month old so I’ve only tried the cradle position but I love it and so does she!   I wear it around the house when I need both of my hands free.  She sleeps in it very contently but when she’s awake she can peek right up at me and that keeps her happy too.
I used the K’tan one day when I went shopping.  I put my son in the stroller and her in the sling and off I went.  It was really comfortable and didn’t put any strain on my back.  The one thing I really love about this sling is that I am able to nurse my daughter in it hands free!  I even used it in a restaurant one day and it kept me covered quite well except for around the waist where I easily used a blanket to keep my stomach from showing.  Another thing that works well for this purpose is the Bella Band.  The baby is in the perfect position for nursing.  I look forward to trying all of the other positions I can wear the Baby K’tan as my daughter grows.

Thanks for reviewing this. I am currently looking for a sling and your review was helpful!
