My kids have less than two weeks of school left and I am starting to panic a little. I know that in order to keep them from driving me crazy, I need to keep them busy! I’m starting to form some sort of a game plan in my head on how to occupy them in somewhat productive ways rather than leaving them to their tech devices. My oldest daughter is very interested in cooking and has been starting to dabble in the kitchen. A new title from Prestel Junior has just provided me with 20 days worth of activities for her! It’s titled 20 Recipes Kids Should Know by Esme Washburn and photographer Calista Washburn.
This hardcover book was written and photographed by a pair of teenage sisters to inspire budding chefs to learn some basics in the kitchen. It includes recipes in 7 different categories including breakfast, lunch, appetizers, main dishes, sides, desserts, and “more”. My 10 year old daughter has already scoured it’s pages and picked out the recipes she wants to try first.
I love that this book covers such a large variety of recipes. Most, if not all of the recipes are things my kids would eat and I love having a book to guide me with a starting point to teach them a little bit of independence in the cooking arena. Some of the recipes are very, very basic but include detailed directions that are easy to follow. One of them is the Quintessential Grilled Cheese Sandwich. You might be thinking, do I really need a recipe for that? But if you’re 10 and have never made one before, step by step directions from a “recipe” can be very helpful! It’s one of the recipes my daughter picked to try first because she thought it would pair well with the Tasty Black Bean Soup recipe that she is dying to try!
Honestly, I am really looking forward to this one as well! The soup sounds delicious and I’m not surprised that she choose this one. She’s never had black bean soup before but she knows she likes black beans and loves to try new things. The photographs of each recipe in this book make the food look so appetizing you can’t help but want to try them all!
