This week’s Frequently Asked Question from eBeanStalk

Great questions! First things first…there is no “best” time for all kids. The typical age-range to transition a child out of a crib is between the ages of two and two and a half. But if the child is still in the crib longer, that’s ok too.
Before you make the switch: If you are trying to decide when is the right time, here are some things you may want to consider; is your child way too big for the crib? is he uncomfortable? will he fall over if he’s standing up in the crib?
Ways to change to transition to the big bed:
-Naps/Bed; Night/Crib: Some kids have a fear of the bed and are very comforted by the crib — think about naps in a bed and night-time in the crib.
-Go Slow: Taking down one side of the crib, and making it more bed-like. Or get a child-bed that has a 3/4 barrier on the ‘open’ side to prevent the child from falling-out.
-Go Shopping: A great way of transitioning is having the child go shopping with you for a new bed, sheets, pillows etc.
-Be Sensitive & Be Positive: One very important thing to consider and remember when you do this transition is to please make sure your child is not going through too many changes in his life at this time (potty training, new baby, new school, etc). Start prepping the child for the crib by saying “big girls/boys sleep in a bed” and positively approach the child about this.
