My kids have watched The BoxTrolls 3 times in as many days. I think it’s pretty safe to say that they enjoy the movie. We really wanted to see this in the theater when it first came out but we never made it. Needless to say, my kids were super excited when they found out that we now own a copy! The movie is from the makers of Coraline and Paranorman. Coraline is one of my very favorite kids movies so I was anxious to see how The BoxTrolls would stack up.
The BoxTrolls, an animation from Universal Pictures was released on Blu-Ray/DVD/Digital HD today. You might be wondering what BoxTrolls are and that’s completely understandable. They are a community of quirky creatures that live in a cavernous home built beneath the streets of Cheesebridge and have raised a human boy named Eggs. Archibald Snatcher, the town’s villain is plotting to get rid of the Boxtroll monsters but not if Eggs can stop him! He decides to venture above ground where he meets Winnie and they come up with a daring plan to save the family.
The story is based upon the book Here Be Monsters! The Boxtrolls voice cast includes Academy Award® nominee Toni Collette, Jared Harris (Mad Men), Nick Frost (The World’s End), Richard Ayoade (The Watch), Tracy Morgan (30 Rock), and Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead).
The BoxTrolls received 13 nominations including Best Animated Film for the 42nd annual Annie Awards presented by the International Animated Film Society. The Blu-Ray 3D combo pack will retail for around $40. You can watch the trailer below:
One of the reasons I loved Coraline so much was because of the music. The BoxTrolls didn’t capture my attention with it’s score but the quirky characters and unique storyline did. I also love the humor and can understand why my kids have enjoyed the movie so much. When Eggs is learning to be a normal boy, Winnie is trying to teach how to properly shake hands. Instead he puts both of his hands in the air and shakes them around — that of course, elicited giggles from my kiddos. Our family gives the movie 2 thumbs up! Get your copy HERE.
