If you’re like me, and more than likely, most parents, you struggle with finding ways to entertain your kids that don’t involve a screen. It feels like such a WIN when you find something that works. One of those things for me is drawing. My girls really enjoy drawing but they often talk me into watching “How to Draw” videos on YouTube which kind of defeats the purpose (although it does me a feel a little better than when they are playing some silly game or watching cartoons). How to Draw books are ideal because it gets them completely off the screen. Quatro has some really cute new drawing books that will be great for our upcoming vacation and long flight. I always try to pack little games and paper activities to help pass some of the time. Having new drawing books they are excited about digging into gives them a little something to look forward to as we travel to our destination.
My youngest daughter has a knack for drawing cute little characters so the Chibi Art Class: A Complete Course in Drawing Chibi Cuties and Beasties by Instagram sensation and anime artist Yoai is right up her alley. Chibi is Japanese slang for “short”, an appropriate word for the little doll-like characters with dreamy eyes. She flipped through the book already and is really excited about trying it out. It includes step by step tutorials and plenty of inspiration. It shows you how to draw different hairstyles, facial expressions, clothing, backgrounds, props and so much more! It teaches different shading techniques and other valuable knowledge for young artists. We are really excited about this book!
My older daughter likes to draw animals. Draw 62 Animals and Make Them Cute by Heegyum Kim is a fun choice. The book shows you how to draw basic sketches of 62 different animals with step-by-step sketches then offers a page of inspiration to “make them cute” including different poses, textures, props etc. The book also offers valuable drawing tips throughout.
I love that this books challenges the artist to go beyond the basic sketch provided and use their imagination to create their own spin-off. My daughter’s teacher has been encouraging her to use her own mind when drawing since most of the time she looks at a picture and tries to create an exact replica. With this book she can do both and stretch her drawing skills.
Quarto is a great resource for books that encourage creativity. These are two examples of drawing books but they offer so much more in many different categories as well.
