Back to The Roots: Fun Growing Kits for Home or School #Giveaway

I’m always in awe of  homes that have lovely plants growing inside.  I don’t have much of a green thumb myself but want to start adding some plant life to make our house feel a little more homey.  Back to the Roots offers some great kits for indoor gardening so I can start small and easy.  They sent me a few items to try out and so far I’ve been having a lot of fun with them and my kids have been very interested to help out. They were particularly pumped about the Water Garden 2.o.

My kids have been asking for a fish for years so when the Back to the Roots Water Garden arrived they couldn’t wait to get a fish!  The kit comes with a coupon for $3 off a male Beta fish at Petco or Walmart.  I picked ours up at Petco.  They had a good selection with different varieties and colors.  We picked a male Feathertail that is a gorgeous blue green color.  The kids named him Patrick.

Tank set up was super easy and took only a few minutes.  The kit comes with everything you need including:

This self-cleaning fish tank grows organic herbs and microgreens on top.  The mini aquaponics ecosystem allows the fish waste to fertilize the the plants on top while the plants clean the water.  This will cut down on the water changes required making your tank easier to care for.  I love this because I need low maintenance with our busy lives!  It doesn’t take up a lot of space and is aesthetically pleasing.  The sound of the pump trickling water to the grow pods is relaxing and watching the fish swim around is also very calming.

The plants sprouted very quickly.  This photo of our tank was taken only a few days after set up!  My kids were amazed and so was I!  I actually grew something!  The grow pods contain special rocks, no dirt.  You just sprinkle the seeds in and set the tray on top of the tank.  There’s a small hole for feeding the fish.  It only needs about 6 tiny food pellets twice a day.  This “chore” is NOT on my plate.  The kids LOVE feeding Patrick so I don’t have to worry about keeping the fish OR the plants alive!  It’s almost self-sufficient!

I’ve always wanted to have my own lavender plant but had never considered growing it inside until I saw this Back to the Roots Windowsill Lavender Planter.  It comes with a jar of dirt, seeds, fertilizer and growing instructions.  I planted ours about a week ago and I can’t wait until it sprouts!

I’ve even more excited for when it actually blooms so I can smell the fragrant lavender!  I put in near some windows with lots of light and hope it will be happy there.  We live in the Pacific Northwest and now that we are heading into fall will have mostly grey, rainy days and not a lot of sun.  I’ve got my fingers crossed that the light will be enough!

Lavender smells lovely, has beautiful purple flowers and has many household uses! The Back to the Roots Lavender Windowsill Planter is the easiest way to grow organic lavender indoors and at home.  There are no chemicals, no transplanting or draining is needed and I’ll be able to harvest organic lavender year round, even though I don’t have a green thumb!

Last but not least, we planted a Kitchen Herb Garden! This Garden in a Can kit came with organic cilantro, organic mint and organic basil, all things we will use!  These pop top cans come with filled with dirt and the seeds to plant in them as well as growing directions. Biochar technology allows growing in the can without draining. No chemicals, no transplanting, and no messy drainage holes!

I planted ours and put them in the window by our kitchen sink.  Keeping them here will allow them to get light and also hopefully keep me accountable for taking care of them.  How can I forget to water them when they are so close to the sink I use all day, everyday?  I can’t go wrong, right?  I can’t wait to use the cilantro in my guacamole, put some fresh basil on our homemade pizza and use the mint for various garnishes!
