We’ve had some readers express interest in learning about blogging so we’ve decided to make it a weekly series on Mommies with Cents! If you are interested in learning how to start your own blog or to cultivate and grow the one you have, we welcome you to join us!
Today’s questions is “What is the first step to starting a blog?”
Once you’ve made the decision to start up your own blog and assuming you already have a theme/topic in mind, you’ll need to come up with a name for your blog. You’ll want to think this through because it will be your website address. If you plan on registering your domain name at some point ($10/yr) we advise making sure that it is actually available before setting up a blogging account. You can do this by typing it into your browser. If the page isn’t found then it’s available. Registering your domain name isn’t necessary but it shortens your website address and helps people remember it so they can return to it. Originally before we registered domain, our website address was mommieswithcents.blogspot.com. It was free and provided by Blogger, the blogging platform we had chose to blog from. That brings us to the next step.
Choose a blogging platform. The most common are:
These free accounts include free hosting of your content including pictures and video. Mindy and I started at Blogger. It was simple and easy to use and we were please with the service. Once you set up your account, you’ll want to pick a template and start adding content. Play around with it. Try different backgrounds and layouts. Learn to add pictures, video, links etc. If you have any questions, we’d be happy to help. Just shoot us an email at mommieswithcents at gmail dot com.
When Mindy and I started out we had no idea what we were doing. We learned as we went and even though it’s been a few years, there is still so much to learn! We are learning new things all of the time and it’s so much fun! We’ve had help along the way and we want to pay it forward. I want to make a button for my blog so I would not mind a step by step for that. Thanks!

I would also love to know how to make buttons. I’m self-taught, and it’s hard to figure out the graphic stuff.
