April is National Poetry Month and Candlewick books has a collection of books for kids to help celebrate.
- Switching on the Moon: A Very First Book of Bedtime Poems
Collected by Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek Peters- a collection of bedtime poems from around the world. This book is suitable for a gift, especially a baby shower or first birthday gift. It’s hard backed and filled with a large selection of poetry.
- In The Wild by David Elliott– Written for children up to age five, this book which is illustrated by Holly Meade, features simple poems about creatures in the wild. My favorite line in the book is “I wish we had, for Zebra’s sake, a different alphabet”. The illustrations in this book are awesome.
- A Primer About the Flag– This book shows that this is a large variety of flags used for different things. It’s simple and each page only has a few words. The whole story is retold in a single paragraph on the final page.
- Falling Hard: 100 Love Poems by Teens– Available in hardback or paperback. Ah…teen love. This book takes me back. “Whether the romantic escapades described are touching, comical, or tragic, whether the feelings expressed are tender and sweet or brutal and biting, readers will find the love these young poets openly share to be exquisitely, excruciatingly, endlessly fascinating.”
- Twelve Round to Glory: The Story of Muhammad Ali-The story of Mahammad Ali from birth through his boxing years and beyond written in “rap inspired” verse. This is a super cool book for ages 10 & up.
