April is National Poetry Month and what better way to celebrate it with your kids than with Shel SIlverstein’s renowned poem books for children age 4-8. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Where The Sidewalk Ends and the special anniversary edition book includes 12 extra poems for your enjoyment.
I remember these books from when I was a child so it’s fun to experience them again with my own children who are all in the perfect age range to enjoy them. The majority of poems from the entire collection are one page or less making the books fun and easy to pick up and read any time. I actually find that we have the most quality reading time together when we are in the car. That might seem a little odd but we have a decent amount of time while we wait for the school bus in the morning and it’s the perfect time to read together! And since my girls only go to school part time, they are with me while we wait for my son to be dropped off after school — more time for reading!
The poems are quirky and silly. Some are simple yet educational. The illustrations are amusing and funny. They are a must-have for any book collection! Here’s one of our recent favorites from Falling Up:
SNOWBALL
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I though I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for it’s head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first — it wet the bed.
I love reading these poems to my kids because they are little bite sized gems. I can ask my kids questions and analyze the poem a little before moving on to the next one. Sometimes we read the same one several times to let it sink in. They’re great for bedtime too because any page is a good stopping point!
