Early childhood educator Gayle Hardgrave has written a book that acknowledges the difficulty many children have starting school for the first time.
In Daniel Goes to Preschool, four-year-old Daniel, while initially excited, begins to feel real trepidation as the big moment draws near. His emotions change from excited to sadness as he suddenly realizes that going to preschool means he will be apart from his mother all day in a strange new place.
With gentle understanding, Daniel’s mom helps him through those first uncomfortable minutes at his new school. As Daniel gazes at the new world opening up to him, he begins to realize that he can manage this challenge. Poignantly, he says to his mom before she leaves, “I think I will like it here, Mama!”
Blended within the story are various Spanish vocabulary words that will not only appeal to bi-lingual children and their families but also gently introduces English-speaking children to common Spanish words.
The story also contains prompts for parents/care givers on almost every page that help them discuss the story with the child(ren).
Throughout Daniel Goes to Preschool, Daniel’s evolving emotions are illustrated, showing the importance of love and understanding when undertaking a new challenge. I am a fanatic of children’s books and found that I did not care for the illustrations in Daniel Goes to Preschool.
Author Gayle Hardgrave has a master’s degree in early childhood education and over thirty years experience teaching three-year-old to five-year-old children. She is a lifelong early childhood educator and a nationally recognized early childhood trainer.
