When it comes to lip products, I’m definitely a lip gloss gal. Even when I wear lipstick or a lip stain I can’t resist putting a gloss over it. I love how it can completely change the look by blending the colors or adding shine or shimmer.
DIY Kit Creations offers a kit with everything you need to make your own lip gloss. I was super excited to try it out and it was a perfect mother-daughter activity to do with my 12 year old. She’s just starting to be interested in makeup and loves doing things that are creative. This kit allows you to blend the perfect shade with just a hint of color or a more dramatic pigmented look — you decide!
The standard kit comes with the clear lip gloss base, 5 pigments, two pigment scoops, 6 empty lip gloss tubes, two syringes for filling them, a mini spatula, a tiny silicone mixing bowl, and moisturizing coconut oil.
You start with about a tablespoon of lip gloss base in your mixing bowl then add whichever pigments you like. Stir it with the spatula to blend the pigment into the lip gloss base.
If you prefer your gloss to be a little less sticky you can add a few drops of the coconut oil and stir until well blended. Then use the syringe to draw the gloss out of the bowl and get it into the lip gloss tube. Make sure to put the syringe all the way down into the tube to start or you’ll get an air bubble in the bottom (as you can see in my pink tube below — it was a learning process!)
McKinley wanted her gloss tube to have a layered look so she made two different colors and alternated them in the tube. She calls the color “Peaches and Cream”. I chose the pinkest shade of pigment and used a few scoops to make it fairly bright.
This project was a little messier than I expected because the gloss is pretty thick and sticky. There’s only one bowl so you have to clean it out between colors. I don’t recommend trying to just wash it down the drain. We learned that the hard way! Instead, wipe as much as you can out with a paper towel and then wash the bowl with dish detergent to cut the grease.
The formula of the lip gloss is just what you’d expect a lip gloss to be and we were happy with the end result. We still have four more empty tubes that we save to use another time and I can’t wait to try the darker color —it’s so pretty and perfect for fall!
There are endless color possibilities for nourishing and hydrating lip glosses with this awesome kit! Visit www.DIYKitCreations.com to learn more or to place an order. While you’re there, check out the Nail Polish Making Kit too! Either of these would make great Christmas gifts for teens and beauty-lovers!
