October is a really fun but also particularly busy month for our family. Mine and my youngest daughter’s birthdays are at the beginning of the month along with basketball tryouts. My oldest two kids made the select team so practices have already started, twice a week for each of them. All three of them are also practicing for baseball/softball, one of them has a tournament this month and my youngest plays select soccer so she has games and practice every week as well! Downtime is miniscule but we do our best with the time we have. We squeeze in creativity where we can. That’s why I love Gramma in a Box. This subscription service makes it so easy to craft in the kitchen with minimal mess!
So, what is Gramma in a Box you ask? It’s a subscription service that comes with everything you need to make 2 candy crafts plus one cookie decorating kit for just $20. It’s a pretty great deal considering the cost of the supplies to make these items plus the time it would take to gather them. My kids look forward to getting this box every month. It’s been over a year and they haven’t tired of it at all! In fact, my oldest daughter said the October box was the best one yet!
This month’s box was Halloween themed and the first project was Spooky Witches hats. You start by heating the melting chocolate slowly in the microwave. Once it’s ready, coat the Oreo Thins cookies with the chocolate, add an unwrapped Hershey Kiss and sprinkle with Halloween colored sprinkles. Make sure you don’t overdo it with the melting chocolate because the leftovers are used for project number two. Occasionally some of the ingredients get broken in shipping. Oreo Thins are pretty fragile so two of them were broken. My girls always find it easy to improvise by “gluing” them back together with melting chocolate or finding an alternative in our pantry.
Project number two was Crispy Monster Bites. Just mix the Krispy Rice cereal with the leftover melting chocolate then add gummy worms and candy bones and eyeballs. We love seeing what Gramma Terry finds for these projects — We’ve never seen these candies before! She always comes up with some unique and awesome things for us!
The third project is always cookie decorating and our personal favorite. The kit contains three colors of frosting in ready to use mini tubes and several different shapes and sizes of cookies as well as a variety of colored sugar/sprinkles for decorating. My girls also like to use any leftover candies from the first two projects.
They love letting their creativity shine with the cookie decorating and the kit is perfectly made to be split up between two decorators. I love that they get to spend this quality time together!
“Gramma Terry” started making Gramma in a Box for her grandkids who live in a different state. She’d send them the kit and they’d do the projects “together” via Skype. The contents of each box are always very organized. The directions are easy to follow so it’s clear which ingredients go with which project. Gramma gives lots of tips for the cookie decorating and even gives video demonstrations on her social channels! My kids love trying out her techniques!
