Rock Art has become very popular over the past few years. There are even groups and clubs that paint rocks and “hide” them for other people to discover. My kids have found several really cool rocks in obscure places and have developed in interest in the rock art movement. I have a collection of acrylic paints but haven’t been able to bring myself to let the kids have at them just yet. The mess terrifies me! Luckily, I found an awesome solution. Using mess-free Kwik Stix my kiddos can get creative without stressing mom out!
Kwik Stix are solid tempera paint sticks that dry in 90 seconds. They allow you to paint without using brushes or water. The design and consistency of Kwik Stix paint remind me of a glue stick. They twist from the bottom and smoothly rub paint onto your project. One of the really cool things about Kwik Stix is that they can be used on paper, wood, canvas, posters, aluminum and so much more! We gave them a whirl on rocks and were quite happy with the results!
The colors are vibrant and fun. We used both Classic and Neon for our rock art. Kwik Stix are AP certified (non-toxic) and are gluten, egg and peanut free so they’re ultra safe for everyone.
Since most rocks aren’t completely smooth but rather have a bit of texture, you may need to go over your rock a few times for good coverage. We did our project outdoors since it was a nice day but I’d even let the kids paint with these in the house. They are virtually mess-free!
You can’t get super precise with Kwik Stix because they are pretty wide but we made lots of cool patterns and designs. Many of them would make great backgrounds if we decided to draw or paint pictures on them with another medium. Kwik Stix are water soluble so if you plan on hiding your rocks outdoors, I’d recommend giving them a clear coat. I’ve heard there are some sprays that work well for this.
My kids had so much fun creating with Kwik Stix and my stress level stayed low knowing I wasn’t going to have a huge mess to clean up. I loved watching them put their creativity to use and I know this is going to be a project they come back to again and again. You can learn a little more about Kwik Stix and see them being used in the video below:

We have an artist in our household who would love these
I have a bunch of grandkids that would appreciate this. We are always looking for something for them to do while they come to visit.
My grandson had a tiny box of Kwik Stix at a restaurant along with a few crayons as a kid treat to keep occupied while waiting for lunch to be fixed. He had fun making different shapes. It was definitely not messy and came in bright color
