Not only is it healthier for your precious bundle, making your own baby food can save you a bundle too! All you need are a couple of ice cube trays, a blender or food processor, and a little bit of time once a month or so. Pureed fruits and veggies can be frozen in ice cube trays then popped out and stored in a freezer bag for up to 3 months but are best when used within a month. The nice thing about the food cubes is that they are the perfect size so there is a lot less waste. One cube equals about 1 ounce. Heating in the microwave takes around 30 seconds so even if your baby decides he is still hungry, he won’t have to wait long for you to pop in another cube.
There are a lot of free resources on the web for homemade baby food. One of my favorites is wholesomebabyfood.com. They provide a price comparison break down of leading brands of baby food vs. homemade. A few examples: Peas and sweet potatoes are about $.04 per ounce, bananas $.01 per ounce and applesauce $.03 per ounce vs. $.23 per ounce for Gerber brand baby foods.
I myself have made applesauce, squash, sweet potatoes, peas and carrots for my son. I’ve never frozen bananas but it’s always easy to mash up a fresh one. I haven’t put much effort into it and I do feed him some Gerber foods when fresh are out of season or when they are a little more difficult to make (like green beans). I started with the basics and plan to look into different food combos and try a wider variety of fruits and veggies as my son gets older. The benefits of making your own baby food far outweigh the convienience of purchasing pre-made foods. Try it for yourself!

Hi again Holly!
I just wanted to say that I make all my own baby food.
I did it for my 4 year old and am doing it now for my 7 month old. I use the website you posted often but mainly I follow the book “Super Baby Food”.
Making your own baby food is easy, cheap and healthy!
My kids eat the weirdest things too.
My 7 month olds favorite meal right now is avacado and parsnips!
