MeeGenius Review & Giveaway

I can’t believe how often I let my three year old use my iPhone.  I think he uses it more than I do!  The great thing about it is that there are lots of educational games and activities for children that can be downloaded from iTunes and he actually learns a lot.  Plus, it’s a great motivator.  I can almost always get him to clean up his toys when I tell him that once everything is picked up he’ll earn iPhone time.  One of his current favorite activities is reading books on the MeeGenius! Library.

MeeGenius! was founded by parents Wandy Yeap Hoh and David Park and it’s among the 10 ten paid book apps on iTunes.  Normal price is $1.99 for the app but right now you can get it for just $.99 and it includes 12 books!  Some of the titles include The Princess and The Pea, The Boy Who Cried Wolf,  and Goldilocks and The Three Bears.  New titles are constantly being added and are available for download for $1.99 each.  In fact, two new titles have just been released- “ The Hiccup Mummy” and “ Halloween 1-2-3”- just in time for Halloween!

Many of the stories are classics.  They are read aloud at a fairly slow pace and the words are highlighted as they are read helping children develop their reading skills.  When I first heard one of the stories I thought it was read too slow and that my son would lose interest.  Then I realized how it corresponded to the text and that it actually captured Jackson’s attention.  I was impressed!  I love that we have a whole “library” of books available at the touch of a button.  Jackson “reads” them over and over and doesn’t seem to tire of them.

The initial cost of the app is an awesome value but the $1.99 per additional title seems like a lot to me.  I’d be more apt to purchase them if they were priced at $.99 each.  Still, this is an app we’ll be keeping around as it gets used quite a bit at our house (and the car, and the grocery store etc. etc. etc!)
