At our house, the tv stays off during the day for the most part. I don’t watch television during the day and neither do my kids. When my husband is home, however, the tv is always on but our kids don’t pay much attention to it (they are 2 and 8 months). My son is just now starting to like movies and we have several- Coraline, Cars, The Tale of Despereaux and Bolt. When I need a break or Jackson is tired and cranky I put a movie on for him. Until recently he wouldn’t sit and watch more than 10 minutes of it. As much as I hate to admit it, I am glad that he is enjoying movies a little more as it gives me a little “quiet time”. I try to limit movies to one per day no more than 3 times a week but on weeks that my husband works 12 or more hours I often put a movie on right before the kids bedtime to help them wind down and give myself a break after a long day.

I think that TV can be educational if used in the right context and with the right content.
I love to watch TV myself so it is hard to completely rule it out. We do not have cable (and I do hate commercials on regular tv). I would like to have more educational DVDs for my son, though.
