Some of my favorite movie characters are animal sidekicks. From Sebastian the lobster in Little Mermaid to Abu, the quirky little monkey in Aladdin, these films just wouldn’t be the same without humor that they bring to the movie.
In Coraline, the animal sidekick is a nameless black cat (or maybe his name is Cat). While he didn’t bring as much to the table, in my opinion, as the previously mentioned sidekicks I still really enjoyed this film. To his credit, he did help Coraline defeat her “Other Mother” he just wasn’t as lovable.
The graphics and special effects in Coraline are awesome! The DVD can be viewed in 3-D and comes with special viewing glasses. The musical scores in the movie are fantastic too!
Coraline is a story about a little girl who discovers another world through a small door in her new house. There she has an “other mother” and “other father” who have buttons for eyes but are super nice and fun. But she soon finds that everything is not as it seems.
There are some parts that may seem scary to small children but my two year old who doesn’t sit still long enough to watch movies actually watched about half of Coraline. He asks to watch it again almost daily.
From the makers of Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline isn’t all hearts and rainbows. It has a darker side but it’s a nice change from the ordinary. Check out the trailer:
