My daughter’s friend decided to have a “Candy Shack” this summer. She brought some candy out to a table and started trying to sell it to the neighborhood kids for ridiculous prices. She didn’t do well, asking $1 for a Tootsie Pop. I think what she needed was Adam and Matthew Toren’s book “Kidpreneurs”.
Adam Toren and Matthew Toren are great examples of people with entrepreneurial spirits. For years, they have been researching and teaching business techniques, and have used that they have learned by starting and running their own businesses. One of their specialties is buying businesses that are not doing well and improving them. And, one of their favorite things to do is help other people, including kids, with their businesses. When the Toren brothers couldn’t find an age appropriate book on how to start or run businesses they decided to write one themselves.
Kidpreneurs is an adorable book written for the 7-13 crowd. It has great colors and pictures and fantastic information on how adults make money, the what and how of entrepreneurship, and how kids can get started with their own businesses right away. It is written in a kid-friendly way and makes some difficult adult concepts easy to understand. Best of all, it’s not just about how to make money, it’s about how to run a responsible business, including a chapter on being green and business ethics. It’s an excellent message to send.
My favorite chapter is Chapter 8, Giving Back. “While you are busy working and trying to be successful with your business, don’t forget to give back to your community. There are many people in the world who do not have the opportunities that you have. It is up to us to make this a better world for everyone. Educate yourself on the many charities or causes that you can support. Don’t say “If I make enough, then I will give.” Say, “I am going to give some now and then give more as I become more successful.”
The very last page has a simple model for a business plan – one that is easy to fill out but asks all the right questions. Maybe adults should be using it!
Kidpreneurs has a suggested retail price of $12.95. It will arrive in bookstores in November but is available for pre-release purchase on Kidpreneurs.org.
